Sugar Free Hot Cross Buns


The buns:

  • 2 tsp dried yeast
  • 1/2 tsp raw honey
  • 1 1/2 cups milk, warmed
  • 4 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • a pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp raw honey
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup raisins

The crosses:

  • 1/4 cup wholewheat flour
  • 2 tsp raw honey
  • 2 - 3 tbsp boiled water


  • Mix yeast and honey with the yeast and leave for five minutes until frothy.
  • Meanwhile, mix flour and spices together in a large bowl.
  • Pour the yeast mixture into the flour along with the egg, vanilla and melted butter. Stir until smooth. Pour in the raisins and knead until incorporated.
  • Cover the dough and leave to rest till doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 200C and grease a baking tray. Divide the dough into 12 equal balls and place a little apart in the tray. Cover and leave to rise for another 15 minutes.
  • Mix the ingredients for the glaze and pour into a piping bag with a small nozzle.
  • Pipe crosses onto the buns once risen before popping in the oven for 20 minutes or until cooked fully.
  • Serve with a spread of butter, enjoy!
